Swing & Comping 전집중 연습
Jazz Drumming Tutor
Learn the basics of swing rhythms and comping on the drums! The foot hi-hat plays automatically on beats 2 and 4.
The Swing Feel: Triplets
In standard time (4/4), we usually divide each beat into two equal parts (eighth notes). In swing, we divide each beat into three equal parts, called triplets. The basic ride cymbal pattern in swing often emphasizes the first and third notes of each triplet, creating the characteristic "Spang-a-Lang" feel: (1) 2 (3), (1) 2 (3), ...
A common ride pattern is "one, two-and, three, four-and": 1 (2 3) 1 (2) 3 | 1 (2 3) 1 (2) 3. Listen closely!
Comping: Snare & Kick Rhythms
'Comping' is short for accompanying. In jazz drumming, it means playing rhythms on the snare and kick drum that interact with the main swing rhythm (played on the ride cymbal). Good comping adds texture and interest without being predictable. Avoid playing on every beat; instead, create syncopated patterns.
Use the grids below to program your comping patterns. Each square represents one eighth-note triplet subdivision (3 per beat, 12 per measure). Click a square to activate/deactivate a note for that drum at that time.
